First look – The extroverted and eye-catching Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Orange Ceramic

Almost a decade after the Big Bang exploded onto the watch scene in 2005 – the epitome of an oversized, highly dynamic sports watch with an unusual fusion of materials – Hublot introduced the Spirit of Big Bang. As the name suggests, the new collection retained the “spirit” of its predecessor, but replaced the octagonal, porthole-shaped case with a more complex, tonneau-shaped case with side rubber buffers and openwork dials. Nine years later and still going strong, Hublot launches its first Spirit of Big Bang in orange ceramic. Needless to say, the eye-catching Fanta Orange ceramic will attract attention and how.

As Hublot's first non-round design, the brand wanted the Spirit of Big Bang's tonneau-shaped case to have just as much personality as its octagonal sibling. To ensure that its lineage does not stray too far from the Big Bang, the Spirit of Big Bang adopted design features such as the sandwich case construction, the six H-shaped screws in the bezel, cut-out elements and a combination of high-tech materials. The result was an elongated barrel-shaped case with a curved profile and a more elegant presence on the wrist. Originally featuring a 45mm case, the Spirit of Big Bang is now available in a wide range of case sizes and an incredible variety of case materials.

As a pioneer in the field of colored ceramic watches, you're no doubt familiar with some of Hublot's more striking color options. The model we photographed for this article is the orange ceramic reference, a bold, dramatic color that we saw aboard a Big Bang Unico last year.

Measuring 42mm in diameter and 14.1mm thick, the 100m waterproof orange ceramic case, bezel and caseback are made from zirconium sintered at very high temperatures. In contrast to the polished orange ceramic elements, the H-screws in the bezel, the titanium crown and pushers, and the rubber bumpers are all black, a two-tone theme that continues through to the black strap with its orange ribbed inlay.

The three counters on the openwork dial, two for the chronograph at 3 and 6 o'clock and the running seconds at 9 o'clock, are orange and match the skeletonized hands, the edge rail, the indices and the frame of the date window at 4:30 o'clock. Visible from both sides of the case is the HUB4700 automatic chronograph caliber, a skeletonized version of Zenith's El Primero high-frequency (5 Hz) column wheel chronograph with a 50-hour power reserve. The Spirit of Big Bang Orange Ceramic is a limited edition of 200 pieces and available at retail 32,900 CHF or 37,600 euros.

In addition to the orange ceramic launch, Hublot has also released an unlimited dark Frosted Carbon reference with a beguiling, mottled effect meant to evoke the carbon fragments trapped in ice. The price for this carbon version is CHF 26,900 or 30,800 euros. Further information at hublot.com.
