A movement with a pedigree

Inside the Montre de Souscription 5 is the Angelus caliber A5000, an exceptional movement with a remarkable track record. The history of this thin hand-wound monopusher can be traced back to 1989, when François-Paul Journe founded a joint company with Denis Flageollet (De Bethune) and Vianney Halter. The company known as THA or Techniques Horlogères Appliquées was responsible for the conception of several movements, including a very special hand-wound monopusher chronograph, the caliber 045MC, housed in a now iconic watch, the 1999 Cartier Tortue Monopoussoir, part of the Collection Privé Cartier Paris (CPCP). Their work was based on a Peseux movement that was modified so that the small seconds was positioned at 9 o'clock instead of 6 o'clock. Using this reliable, thin (2.5mm) base that can generate enough torque to power complications, Journe and Flageollet worked to integrate a chronograph on the back, requiring only 1.7mm of additional space for the complication.

François-Paul Journe left Techniques Horlogères Appliquées in 1995 and transferred the rights to produce this movement to Jaquet SA. In the early 2000s, Jaquet SA changed hands and became La Joux-Perret. This is how the movement, conceived almost three decades ago, found its way into the cases of modern Angelus watches, after being modified several times to meet today's standards.

The movement now known as Caliber A5000 retains most of the features of the classic architecture described above, with a compact 3Hz timekeeping base, 23 jewels and a 42-hour power reserve. When you look at the movement through the caseback, you are greeted with a traditional layout. In an era of vertical clutch automatic chronograph movements that leave no room for imagination, this caliber is simply delightful to watch. All gears, levers, springs and the column wheel are clearly visible. The workmanship is also attractive with beveled bridges, Geneva stripes, beveled levers with straight grain, circular grained gold wheels and polished screws: traditional, not too ostentatious, elegant. For our MONOCHROME Montre de Souscription 5, we chose a version of the A5000 with a 3N gold main plate and bridges that contrast with the stainless steel chronograph mechanism.

A 2N gold tachymeter dial

Now let's discuss the look of this new MdS 5, which shares its basic architecture with the Angelus Chronographe Télémètre but with a few twists to make it ours. As the name suggests, the Angelus version (available in three limited editions: two in steel and one in gold) features a telemeter scale. Our watch, the MONOCHROME x Angelus Chronographe Tachymètre, is different in this aspect as it combines this watch with our passion for cars and especially motorsports.

A tachymeter is used to measure average speeds. This function is mainly used on racing and pilot chronographs. For example, if you drive exactly 1 kilometer or 1 mile, you can use the tachymeter to calculate your average speed (in km/h or mph). And because we at MONOCHROME share a passion for watches and cars, we thought the tachymeter scale would be more appropriate. Together with Angelus we created a snail scale, a homage to vintage watches. The scale is divided from 500 to 30 units and features a double coil on the edge of the dial. A rare feature as there are often snail scales in the center of the dial.

The addition of a tachymeter scale is not the only unique feature of the Montre de Souscription 5. Although we originally considered a salmon-colored dial as a nod to our first Montre de Souscription, a closer examination of vintage Angelus chronograph watches inspired us to design a gold-colored dial. The matte, slightly grained dial is coated in a light 2N gold tone and combined with black prints, polished applied markers and luminous hands.

Compact proportions

Our Angelus Chronographe features a 37mm stainless steel case that is just 9.25mm thick. Designed by Angelus as a nod to its vintage 1950s chronographs, the case features relatively long, slim lugs, making the watch slightly larger than its 37mm diameter suggests. Nevertheless, it remains a relatively small wristwatch. It is sophisticated, elegant and slim, with a beautifully finished case that combines brushed finishes on the sides and top with a contrasting polished bevel on the side.

The right side is where everything happens, as the Montre de Souscription 5 Tachymètre is a single-pusher chronograph. The pusher for starting, stopping and resetting the stopwatch is integrated into the crown, resulting in a balanced, understated and elegant watch. In keeping with the watch's retro inspiration, the dial is protected by a box-shaped sapphire crystal and the back, engraved with the watch's name and individual number, also features its own sapphire crystal to reveal the movement.

The MONOCHROME Montre de Souscription 5 Angelus Chronographe Tachymètre is complemented by a gray nubuck strap secured with a signed stainless steel pin buckle. The watch comes in a presentation box with an additional leather travel case.
