Mahjong is more than just a game, it is a cultural bridge that connects global Chinese communities to East and West and has historically served as a crucial medium for social bonding. And today it serves as a source of inspiration for the creation of a new watch, or more precisely, the hand-carved Mahjong tiles serve as the basis for the latest collaboration between Swedish watch micro-brand Maen and Horoverse watch media platform from Hong Kong and Macau. Based on the brand's classic three-calendar watch, here is the new Maen x Horoverse Brooklyn 36 Mahjong Limited Edition.

Maen, a relatively young brand from Sweden with Dutch roots, has made a name for itself with its Manhattan collection, an original take on the integrated sports watch concept. However, there is more to the brand than that, as we saw when we tested the Skymaster 38 MKIII, a cool and accessible racing chronograph, or when we discovered a watch that made quite a bit of noise, the Jumping Hour, made in collaboration with Nico Leonard. Today the brand unveils another collaboration, this time honoring Asian culture.

After their first collaboration, the Neon City watch based on the Manhattan model, Maen is collaborating with Horoverse again, but this time for something more original and classic at the same time: the Brooklyn 36 Mahjong Limited Edition. Inspired by the local culture of Hong Kong and Macau, where Horoverse originated, this watch uses the Brooklyn 36 Triple Calendar as a blueprint and then adds clever inspiration from the game of Mahjong. The technical basis remains identical and features a compact 36 mm case with a nice brushed and polished finish, an attractive bezel with a radial brushed finish and a box-shaped sapphire crystal. With its modest dimensions and decidedly classic feel, it is a watch intended for everyday use.

Most of the transformation takes place on the dial, using a color palette that reflects the classic Mahjong colors (green, red, blue and white) while maintaining the watch's subtle texture. The base of the dial is tinted green and features recessed silver and grained sub-counters and a pan-shaped minute track. The calendar displays replace classic Arabic numerals and Western words with traditional Chinese characters to indicate the month and day of the week. There are several Easter eggs to be found: The first lunar month (Zhengyue) is deliberately aligned with the Gregorian month of January, a nod to Chinese New Year. The date wheel has also been adjusted to show the “1-Bamboo” (the bird) on the 1st of the month and the green dragon “Fat”, symbolizing wealth, on the 8th.

Under the specially decorated solid caseback there is an automatic movement from Miyota, the caliber 9122, with a triple calendar function. The watch is worn on a specially selected green textile strap that conveys the unique feel of a traditional Mahjong table. Finally, each special edition watch comes with an authentic Mahjong tile hand-carved by a local master in Hong Kong, along with an illustrated poster detailing the history of the tiles.

The Maen x Horoverse Brooklyn 36 Mahjong will be available worldwide as a strictly 24-hour limited edition on Maen's website (dedicated page here) starting March 22, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. Hong Kong time. The watch is offered at the price 899 euros.
