At first glance, this new version of the Black Bay 58 may seem like a small update, mainly focused on introducing revised straps and details to remain consistent with the rest of the BB collection. Still, things can be deceptive. As the Black Bay collection has become more than established in recent years, Tudor has worked to update its cornerstone models in a very discreet way. Take the Black Bay Monochrome for example. At first it felt like a new color scheme and new strap options. Nevertheless, the update was profound. The same goes for the Black Bay 58, a model that first launched in 2018 and was significantly redesigned last year, with a striking burgundy version. Now it's time for the all-important black version to get the same update. And once again there is more to it than meets the eye.

Multiple editions of the original Black Bay 58

First introduced in 2018, the Black Bay 58 was Tudor's answer to those who found the classic Black Bay too big. In fact, the 58 has been shrunk to a wrist-friendly 39mm instead of 41mm, with a reduced thickness of around 12mm compared to the original's hefty 15mm. To the delight of bracelet lovers, the lug width was reduced to 20mm, and while the design remained true to the Black Bay DNA, details such as the oversized crown decorated with the vintage Tudor rose added to its nostalgic appeal. To match this downsized case, Tudor also developed a more compact in-house movement – the Caliber MT5402 – which has the same specifications as its larger brother.

Since its launch in 2018, the BB58 has been available in a range of versions, starting with the classic black and gold-plated model, followed by the blue-on-blue version. Later, Tudor played with materials and offered the Black Bay 58 in bronze, silver and gold and even added a fantastic GMT option to the collection. Last year the model received its biggest update yet. Not only did Tudor release a new all-burgundy edition, but the entire watch was redesigned. New case, new dial, new movement, revised crown and bezel, updated handset and a movement with high accuracy and certifications. Essentially, Tudor used the same recipe when revamping the classic Black Bay with a burgundy bezel in 2023 and the Monochrome edition in 2024. Almost identical at first glance… But almost everything has been updated.

Now it's time for Tudor to update what is probably the most important model in the Black Bay 58 collection and possibly one of its best-selling models: the Black Bay 58 with a black dial, a model we internally call “Black-Gilt” due to its warm, gold-colored accents. Let's start with the case, which, like the 2025 Burgundy edition, is slightly retouched in several places. Firstly, while the diameter remains the same at 39mm, the revised BB58 is slightly thinner at 11.7mm, coupled with a lug-to-lug measurement of 47.8mm. In short, almost perfect proportions for a casual diving watch with 200m water resistance and quite thin compared to the rest of the market. The watch is topped by a vintage-style box-shaped sapphire crystal and the sides of the case appear significantly thinner than before, although the overall thickness has not changed significantly.

There are several other updates on the case. Sure, the BB58 Black-Gilt still looks familiar, but almost every part has been tuned to match the burgundy edition. So the crown returns to a classic, smaller design with more pronounced notches, reminiscent of older Tudor watches. It also sits closer to the case. The bezel follows suit with a sharper, more defined knurling – “toothier” than before, as the old BB58 had a coin-edge profile. Finally, the updated Black Bay 58 retains its classic black anodized aluminum insert with a gold-plated 60-minute scale, red triangle and luminous bead. There are also very subtle changes to the font used for the numbers.

What remains with the dial is the black and gold-plated style, the matte surface of the dial and its slightly curved profile. Looking far more classic, discreet and conventional than last year's burgundy edition, it retains everything we loved about the original BB58 from 2018, but once again subtly tweaks everything. Firstly, the hands, applied markers and text all have gold accents, giving this smaller version of the BB its vintage charm. However, you can still see some differences from the 2018 edition:
- Only two lines of text, compared to three lines before
- The “Master Chronometer” imprint instead of the classic COSC “Chronometer Officially Certified”
- Classic handset with Snowflake hour hand, but revised as the hands are now fixed on the central axis
- New lollipop seconds hand with counterweight instead of diamond-shaped model without counterweight

The Tudor Black Bay 58 Black-Gilt is powered by the same automatic in-house caliber MT5400-U as the Burgundy edition. Manufactured by Kenissi, it has a power reserve of 65 hours and operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour. This movement is certified as a Master Chronometer by METAS after being first tested by the COSC. Once installed in the case, it undergoes further precision testing in six positions, at two different temperatures and at two power reserve levels. It must also be able to withstand magnetic fields of up to 15,000 Gauss. The MT5400-U features a non-magnetic silicon coil spring. It has a stop-second function for precise time setting, is equipped with a balance wheel with variable moment of inertia and has a cross balance bridge.

As with most of its watches, Tudor releases the Black Bay 58 Black-Gilt with multiple options for attaching the watch to the wrist. The first is a classic from the brand, the three-link studded steel bracelet. New to the model is an anniversary-style 5-link steel bracelet and a black rubber option, giving the watch a slightly more modern touch. All are closed by a folding clasp with the brand's T-Fit system. This convenient system allows the wearer to instantly and finely adjust the overall length of the bracelet within an adjustment window of 8mm. The shutter also features ceramic ball bearings that ensure a smooth and secure closure.

All in all, the new Tudor Black Bay 58 Black-Gilt is a subtle but important update to a classic from the brand. Not much changes visually, which is, at least for us, the right way to build a solid collection that lasts a long time. Technically and in terms of comfort, the BB58 is now better than ever. Now let's hope that a blue version joins the collection and completes the range. Prices for the Black Bay 58 Black-Gilt Master Chronometer are EUR 4,770 and EUR 4,880 for the 3-gilt and 5-link steel bracelet respectively, and EUR 4,540 with a rubber strap, identical to the burgundy versions. It is available now at the brand's boutiques and retailers. For more information, visit www.tudorwatch.com.
